Summer hikings in the Saas area

First of all try to get at least the panoramic chart which is on sale (4 sfr) in the Tourist Office or in the "Haus der Geschenke" in the main street.

The hiking routes hereafter mentionned are described on this chart or better on the 1:25 000 hiking map "SAAS FEE - Saastal" (26,80 sfr).

Easy walks

15 Wildi - Fletschorn Hotel

Pretty flat path, shaded by larches. The wide forest path leaves the Wildi area, in the north of Saas-Fee, and reaches the Fletschorn Hotel in 20 minutes. (Well considered restaurant).

16 Fletschorn Hotel - Sengg - Bideralp

If you want to extend the walk, continue til the mountain pasture of Bideralp (1.919m) which you will reach in 50 minutes since the Fletschorn Hotel.

18 Restaurant Honneg - Melchboden - Hannig (2.350m)

Leave Saas-Fee following the road bigining on the left side of the Church. This road enlightened in the evening leads you in 30 minutes to the charming hamlet of Honneg and its restaurant.

From there, continue on the path which winds its way to a crossway of several paths. Take on the left towards Melchboden (small romantic lake with wood bridge). The forest road turns on the right and leads to the mountain station of Hannig cabelway.(1h50 from Melchboden, 2h20 from Saas Fee).

25 Saas-Fee - Gletschergrotte restaurant (1.970m)

From the Saaserhof hotel, to join the "Gletschersee", an old lake which was at the place where the glacier stopped at the beginning of last century. Today it is not any more that one small lake with Turquoise water but observe the height of the Moraines and you will immagine the hugeness of the glacial mass which occupied this place. The glacier is always there but it went up approximately 300 meters.
From the lake, a steep climb of about sixty meters will lead you to the Gletschergrotte restaurant (1.970m). (45minutes from Saas-Fee without counting the pauses)

36 Saas-Fee - Saas-Grund through the Chapel path (Kapellenweg)

Take the path starting between the bus station and the swimming pool (Bielen). The path leads to Saas-Grund in 40 minutes.

40 Saas-Fee - Saas-Almagell (Bodmen forest pat )

A pretty forest road leaves Saas-Fee, on right side of the river, after the panoramic bridge (Panoramabrück) and leads in 30 minutes to the charming village of Saas-Almagell, the fatherland of the ski champion Pirmin Zurbriggen who has an hotel there.

45 Mattmark lake (circuit hike) (2.203m)

Starting from the Mattmark dam, a flat path leads you to Distelalp . (2h30 for the circuit).

46 Saas-Almagell - Zer Meiggeru - Furggalp - Furggstalden - Saas-Almagell

Starting from the carpark beside the small Lake of Zermeiggern, cross the river and take the path which goes up towards Furggalp (2.050m). After 1h15 in a pretty forest you will reach the mountain pasture of Furgg (Furggalp) at the entry of the wide Furgg valley (Furggtal).

Don't follow this valley which leads to the Antrona pass but cross the river using the small wood bridge to reach after a short rise, the hamlet of Furggu (2.075m), the higest point of this hike.
A hundred meters after this hamlet a bench, admirably placed, invites to a pause and contemplation.
Follow then a forest path and sometimes a forest road to reach in 40 minutes the mountain station of the Furggstalden chair-lift .
Do not hesitate to visit this old hamlet which would be the oldest hamlet of the Saas valley. You will also notice there a wood cross with the instruments of the Passion.
You have then the choice either to use the chair-lift, or to go down by the road to the carpark of Zermeiggern, or to follow the path of "the discovery of the forest" which will bring you back to Saas-Almagell in 30 minutes. (2h30 for the circuit)

This circuit is suitable for snow shoes in Winter.

54 Saas-Grund  -  Bodu - Brunnen (1.893m) - Triftalp (2.072m)

From Saas-Grund follow the path which goes up quietly in the forest to the old hamlet of Triftalp with its chapel.

This path, well marked and soft climbing, will enable you to reach Triftalp in approximately 1h15 . A little before Triftalp you'll find a restaurant which can be a goal for an hike.
From Triftalp you may reach the mountain station of the Kreuzboden cableway after a 1 hour walk. If you aren't interested you may follow the forest road which goes down towards Saas-Grund through Tewald (55).

 Intermediate hiking routes

32 Saas-Fee (Kalbermatten) - Plattjen (2.570m)

Start from the station of the Platjen cableway. Follow then the forest road heading the glacier. After a few minutes, you cross the ski piste coming from Platjen. Take the path on the left which will curve in the grasses before joining the forest.
After 45 minutes you'll arrive at Gallenalp (2.054m). From there a path climbs along the piste to reach the mountain inn of
Plattjen (2.411m) (55 minutes from Gallenalp, 1h40 from Saas-Fee).
The inn of Platjen is an ideal place to have a lunch or to drink in the sun while contemplating a splendid panorama on the glaciers and the Mischabel chain   (4.545m).
If you want to use de cableway, you will still need a 30 minutes effort to reach the top station of  the Platjen cableway. If you go up there do not miss the view on Saas-Grund from the terrace located behind the restaurant.
You may also follow for a few minutes the path to the Britania hut.
